From Tunis to Djerba by Car: A One-Way Road Trip

Crossing Tunisia from north to south takes you, in just a few days, from the beaches of Cape Bon to the olive groves of the Sahel, then on to the landscapes of the South. With a one-way rental, you pick up your car in Tunis and return it in Djerba, with no need to backtrack.

The itinerary, step by step

Allow about 600 km in total, ideally over 5 to 7 days to make the most of each stop.

  1. Tunis – Hammamet (about 65 km): pick up your car at Tunis-Carthage airport, take a detour through Carthage and Sidi Bou Saïd, then head for the beaches of Hammamet.
  2. Hammamet – Sousse – Monastir (about 100 km): the medina of Sousse, the marina at Port El Kantaoui, and the ribat of Monastir overlooking the sea.
  3. Monastir – El Jem – Sfax (about 140 km): a must-see stop at the Roman amphitheater of El Jem, then Sfax and its medina.
  4. Sfax – Gabès – Matmata (about 180 km): the road south, all the way to the troglodyte homes of Matmata.
  5. Matmata – Djerba (about 140 km): reach the island by the Jorf ferry or the El Kantara causeway, and return your car at Djerba airport.

The trip also works in the other direction, from Djerba to Tunis, or for just part of the way: our Monastir and Sfax branches are along the route.

Tips for the road

  • Tolls: the A1 highway links Tunis to Sfax. With the electronic toll tag option, you can use the dedicated lanes without waiting at the toll gates.
  • Comfort: for long days behind the wheel, a sedan or an SUV makes the drive more enjoyable.
  • Taking turns at the wheel: add an additional driver to share the driving; they're covered by the same guarantees.
  • Arrival: check the drop-off branch's opening hours on its page; outside those hours, you can still return the car for a surcharge of 70 TND.

How does a one-way rental work?

When you search, uncheck “Same drop-off location” and choose the branch where you'll return the car. Inter-branch (one-way) fees may apply: they cover the cost of bringing the vehicle back to its home branch.
