Monastir Habib Bourguiba International Airport serves the entire Sahel coast: Monastir, Sousse and Port El Kantaoui, Mahdia. With a car picked up as soon as you arrive, these towns and the inland sites are only a few dozen minutes apart.
Your car at Monastir airport
The Hertz branch at Monastir airport hands you your car on arrival. Enter your flight number when you book: if it's delayed, you get a 2-hour grace period.
Our sightseeing ideas
- Monastir: the ribat overlooking the sea, the medina and the mausoleum of Habib Bourguiba.
- Sousse, to the north: its medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the marina at Port El Kantaoui.
- Mahdia, to the south: the old town on its peninsula and its fine sandy beaches.
- El Jem, inland: the Roman amphitheater, also listed by UNESCO.
Which car should you choose?
For getting around between the coastal towns, a city car is economical and easy to park near the medinas. For a family or long days on the road, go for an SUV or a sedan. Not comfortable with a clutch? Choose an automatic car.
Continuing on to Tunis or Djerba
Monastir is a great starting point for crossing the country: from Sousse, the A1 highway heads north to Tunis and south to Sfax. A one-way rental lets you return the car to another Hertz branch: Tunis-Carthage, Sfax or Djerba. Inter-branch (one-way) fees may apply.
